A Tropical Twist on Dutch Dining at Stadscafé Het Consulaat

Stadscafé Het Consulaat

There are restaurants that simply serve good food, and then there are places that create an entire experience. Stadscafé Het Consulaat belongs to that second category. It blends the warm, down-to-earth coziness of a Dutch ‘eetcafé’ with the lush greenery and vibrant atmosphere of the Caribbean. The result? A dining spot where every detail, from the food to the service and the setting, feels like a great surprising experience. An experience that we were allowed to experience during our exclusive preview of the 3-course menu that Stadscafé Het Consulaat will be serving during the upcoming Bonaire Culinary Week (September 25th – October 9th).

The Atmosphere:
Dutch Soul, Caribbean Spirit

The moment you walk in, the mood is set. Colorful, cheerful wall murals give the space a playful energy, while a canopy of trees brings the outdoors inside. Sit beneath the leafy green cover and it’s easy to imagine yourself in the middle of a tropical forest.

At the heart of it all is the central bar, making the restaurant feel like a lively meeting place. Add to that the open kitchen, where you can watch the chefs at work, and you have a setting that is both welcoming and full of life.

Conveniently located in the heart of Kralendijk, Stadscafé Het Consulaat is very centrally located and easily accessible.

Hearty Mains with a Tropical Twist

For the main course, fish lovers shouldn’t miss the Mahi Mahi with Antillean Krioyo Sauce and Funchi. More than just your typical “catch of the day with fries,” this dish is a refined twist that elevates a local classic into something both familiar and exciting. The herbs in the sauce make it wonderfully flavorful, while the funchi is cooked to perfection.

And for those who crave hearty comfort food, the Beef Rendang is a showstopper. Incredibly tender, the kind of meat that falls apart at the touch of a fork, rich in flavor with a subtle hint of coconut, it’s a dish you’ll want to linger over. Served with kouseband beans, just as tradition demands.

Vegetarians will be pleasantly surprised by the Crispy Filo Pastry, filled with feta cheese and served with grilled vegetables. The combination of a drizzle of honey, and balsamic vinegar to finish this dish of feels indulgent yet perfectly balanced.

Sweet Endings

Of course no meal is complete without indulging in dessert. The traditional Dutch ‘Tompouce’ is elevated with a scoop of creamy white chocolate ice cream, creating a perfect balance of flaky pastry, smooth cream, and delicate sweetness.

For something light and refreshing, the Sgroppino is a sparkling delight, a zesty combination of lemon sorbet, vodka, and prosecco that cleanses the palate and adds a playful, effervescent finish to your meal.

Service with a Smile

Great food and atmosphere only go so far without good service, and here the team shines. The staff are attentive without being overbearing, friendly without being forced, and genuinely make you feel at home. Their warmth adds another layer to an already special dining experience.
